August 23rd, 2018 – A Shalom House took place in the March of Life House in Caesarea for 9 Holocaust survivors from Or Akiva, with volunteers from the United States, China and Colombia.
One of the survivors, who is a professional singer, sang the famous Yiddish song, Oyfn Pripetshik (On the Hearth). The song is about a rabbi teaching his young students the Aleph-bet (Alphabet). This song is a major musical memory of pre-Holocaust Europe.
We enjoyed some South American food with Chinese touch. The survivors liked it so much that some of them were asking for the recipe to try it later on at home.
We had a great time trying to communicate to each other in different languages like Hebrew, Yiddish, English and Russian. Some times it turned out very funny to see each one of us putting words together in the different languages we know.
