On April 24th, Ballet Magnificat! concluded their twelve-day tour across Israel with a grand finale at Helping Hand Coalition’s Caesarea headquarters. The event was attended by international guests and twenty survivors of the Holocaust from Beit Ham in Or Akiva, led by Sofia. It was a truly remarkable Shalom House that touched the hearts of all attendees and paid tribute to those no longer with us ahead of Israel’s Remembrance Day (Yom HaZikaron).
Over two thousand years ago, a small Jewish army led by the Maccabees defeated the Greeks, regaining control of Jerusalem and the Temple. Each year, we light our menorahs for eight days to remember their victory, the rededication of the Temple, and God’s deliverance and miracles. On December 22nd, the fourth day of Hanukkah, sixteen survivors of the Holocaust from Beit Ham in Or Akiva, led by Sofia, arrived at Helping Hand Coalition’s headquarters for a special Hanukkah Shalom House lunch!
On June 20th, in a community center in Or Akiva, a new type of Shalom House event was birthed.
There is nothing quite like visiting survivors of the Holocaust and watching their larger-than-life outlook illuminate a room. On June 4th, just before the start of Shabbat, Bozena Gasiorowski and Rita Tager — representatives from Helping Hand Coalition — along with Lena — from the local municipality — traveled to Or Akiva to attend a Shalom House event hosted by Sofia, leader of Beit Ham.
