October 4th, 2018 – 2 couples from Hadera enjoyed a delicious lunch in the March of Life House. They shared with us how they met and got married, about their family and life in Israel, and they also shared about the Holocaust.
One of them was 5 years old when World War II started. Together with his mother and sister he was in a ghetto in Russia. Says Lesly, one of our volunteers: “It brought tears to my eyes as I listened to him talking of what he experienced and saw in his early childhood. Story after story came pouring out, and at the end he asked for three more minutes so he could share with us how his sister survived:
One night, his sister escaped from the ghetto, taking advantage of the fact that the German soldiers were drunk. The family did not know whether she was dead or alive. At the end of the war, a Russian woman came to tell his mom that his older sister was alive. This woman took care of her as one of her own children, hiding her Jewish identity. This time there were tears in his eyes!”
Our guests enjoyed the food and the fellowship, but more than that, they enjoyed to have people willing to listen to their stories – some of which were shared for the first time. We are privileged to be the ones these precious people confide in and feel comfortable to share their lives with.
