November 1st, 2024 – The amazing story below is of Erberhard W. from Germany, who alone financially supports 19 Victims of the Holocaust in the GAiN Sponsorship Program, and decided to write to them and tell them a glimpse about who he is and his story (read below).
Translated letter from Erberhard: «Today you should finally find out and see who your godfather is in Germany.
My name is Eberhard W., I am 86 years old.
I have been to 78 countries in the world, and in 8 countries I have traveled by bicycle with a tent: Nicaragua, Costa Rica, South Africa, America, Egypt, Sri Lanka, Peru and Brazil.
In Brazil, I have had 15 godchildren for over 30 years, whom I have visited 7 times.
I have been to Israel three times, and once we visited Holocaust survivors in Jerusalem as a group in a former diplomatic hotel.
I currently have 17 Holocaust survivors in Israel as godchildren, whom I support financially. I also have a Pafen in Peru.
I have churches in Ghana, Morocco, Kenya, Togo, South Africa and Mozambique, mostly painted by one person. Mostly the parable of the “prodigal son” from the Gospel of Luke. The story of the creation of the world in a Christian school in Peru.
I have not bought food for 43 years and live on what the supermarket throws into the bin. I use the money saved this way for sponsorship.
In South Africa, I had two children under my care, whom I visited 3 times. Since 1984, I have sent sea containers with humanitarian aid to South Africa four times a year for 12 years, a total of 49 times.
I was on site in South Africa when some of the containers were unloaded. Until August of this year, I have been hospitalized 79 times in various hospitals.
Good thing I took out daily health insurance 2 days before my 35th birthday – the only insurance that has really helped me. In the DM era, I got 50 marks per day of hospitalization. Today, that’s 25 euros.
When I ran out of money for containers and sponsorship, God sent me to the hospital. In 1983, I was in hospital for 2 months and 6 weeks.
I got about 5,000 marks for it, which is the same as a shipping container to South Africa.
God is so brilliant!
I have been living alone for 43 years and have been a pensioner for 27 years. Since I could retire at the age of 58 due to 50 percent disability, and the city of Hanover, where I work, was celebrating its 100th anniversary, I designed an exhibition for a year and then retired at the age of 59.
The first seven and a half years of my working life, I worked as a window dresser. Then I had to go into the army for 1 year. Then I studied for 4 years and graduated with the state qualification “designer”. Then I worked for the local council for almost 30 years.
I could go on and on about my eventful life, but I’ll stop now.
Now you have a brief introduction to your sponsor. A big hello and God’s blessing from your godfather. »
